Live band, elaborate costumes, golden oldies enliven sci-fi "Return to the Forbidden Planet"

Forbidden Planet

Pierce College Theatre blasts off on a rock-and-roll flight to “Return to the Forbidden Planet” May 29 to June 1 in Lakewood.

This family-friendly musical tells the story of mad scientist Doctor Prospero, who’s unknowingly jettisoned into space with his infant daughter. Their craft crashes into D’Illyria, the Forbidden Planet, and the adventure begins.

Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Musical, the play by Bob Carlton is loosely based on the 1956 film, “Forbidden Planet,” a sci-fi version of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.”

STAR Center to Celebrate First Anniversary Saturday

Metro Parks’ popular STAR Center celebrates is first anniversary on Saturday with a free community celebration. Metro Parks built the $16 million, 32,000-square-foot facility in order to give the community a place to gather, play and stay active. Since its opening on April 18, 2012, STAR Center has served more than 110,000 program and event participants.

In this camp, kids will experience yoga in a fun-loving environment while discovering more about themselves throughout their journey. Each day we will explore a blend of yoga and art designed to cultivate creativity, self-respect, respect for others and our planet. We will learn yoga poses, play games, create art, tell stories and most of all, have fun! Please pack a snack for your child as we will be taking a short snack break each day.

Birth: A Hero's Journey, at Source Yoga's North Tacoma Studio

In this workshop, Megan Sukys will teach participants how the process of giving birth follows the classic hero's journey of myth and classic literature. Each participant will have the chance to recount the significant moments of their birth experience, develop the key elements into an engaging story and share it. Participants will receive an archival recording of the story they develop in the workshop.
