New Year's Eve is traditionally tough for families, but Tacoma does the holiday right—with an all ages festival and celebration of the arts, right in the heart of downtown.

This year should be better than ever, as Tacoman's young and old prepare to celebrate "The Year of the Metal Tiger." According to the Chinese zodiac, a metal tiger year is about meeting all challenges with grace and strength, and always landing on your feet. What better way to celebrate the end of a tough year than with a celebration of strength and ferocity. (Oh, and fun.)

First Night 2010 will feature Tacoma's first ever Tacoma fire clock, set to go up in flames as we see the old year out and usher in the new.

Although kid friendly, First Night always provides plenty of adult-oriented entertainment. This year is no exception. Music and dance offerings include everything from jazz to hip hop, ballet to Cambodian Classical Dance.

Families will be happy to find plenty to keep the kids engaged, including all day downtown museum admissions (included in the price of your First Night button) street performers, Rodney Raccoon, and other children's entertainment offerings all night long.

Whether you stick it out to midnight or tuck the kids into bed by 10pm, you'll get plenty of value out of your First Night tickets. Kids under 7 are free!

(We never miss a year, and once you try it you won't want to, either.)
