Bates Technical College will host local athlete and disability awareness advocate Steve Ferreira at the annual Disability Awareness Day on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The event will be held at the college’s South Campus Auditorium, 2201 S. 78th Street in Tacoma.
Ferreira was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was three months old, and has been wheelchair-bound since then. The 24-year-old began playing sports at five years old, and has played competitively since 2007. Currently training to qualify for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ferreira also founded Beyond Disabilities, a motivational speaking company that aims to increase awareness about people with disabilities, and educating the public about disability-related issues.
Audience members can purchase a light lunch for $1 during the event while the food lasts.
